In time to chase the winter chill, homemade vegetable beef soup and corn bread muffins are on the menu at Severna Park United Methodist Church on Benfield Road Feb. 15.

The Learn and Share Circle is preparing a delicious recipe from the kitchen of Lynn Webber for the annual soup sale.

The cooks, who begin early on the sale day, will prepare 100 quarts of soup, and when those are sold, says head cook Betty Sosnowski, the sale ends.

"For the last four or five years, we have made it on President's Day," says Sosnowski, "so people have a good meal without having to cook."

The soup sells for $4 a quart; the muffins are six for $1.

The soup is almost all spoken for, but paid orders will be taken after each service on Sunday.

Pickup at the church will be from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.

For information, call 410-987-4700.

Down the street at Our Shepherd Lutheran Church, Shrove Tuesday will be celebrated with a family pancake supper from 6 p.m. to 7: 30 p.m.

Sponsored by the church's family committee, the supper beginning the Lenten season includes pancakes with all the trimmings.

The palms from last year's Palm Sunday are burned during the Shrove Tuesday celebration, then used in the service on Ash Wednesday.

For information, call the church office at 410-647-1658.

Newcomers plan luncheon

The Severna Park Newcomers Club has known for years that good food and good company attract a crowd.

The club's next regular monthly luncheon meeting is planned for Feb. 17 at 11: 30 a.m. at the Sly Horse Tavern in Crofton.

The site of the luncheon is a replica of Historic Williamsburg's Raleigh Tavern.

Speaker Diane Pierce from the Chesapeake Wildlife Sanctuary in Bowie will talk about her organization, which runs the area's only shock trauma hospital and rehabilitation center for wildlife.

The sanctuary, treats more than 10,000 animals annually.

For information on the sanctuary, check the Web site at www.chesapeakewildlife.org.

Deadline for luncheon reservations is Wednesday. For information, call 410-544-1974.

Sewing club to get tips

For those who love to sew and are looking for ways to improve their work, the speaker at the Feb. 18 meeting of the Snip Snap Sewing Club, Phyllis Pitarra, will offer easy tips for making your clothes look more professional.

The former owner of the Creative Needle Magic shop will also help with questions about lining garments.

The club meets from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Christ Lutheran Church on Jumpers Hole Road in Severna Park.

For information, call Dolores Schmeisser at 410-766-8117.

Congratulations

Congratulations to three Severna Park couples celebrating some impressive wedding anniversaries: Charles and Nelda Niemann, 52 years; Don and Harriette Stegman, 55 years; and Paul and Mary McKenzie, 60 years.
