Senior guard scores 40 as Eagles win 7th in row

WASHINGTON -- Jorge Cajigas and Dorian Pena combined for 15 of Coppin State's 19 overtime points and Fred Warrick scored a career-high 40 for the game in an 82-77 win over Howard last night before 1,906 at Burr Gymnasium.

Pena, who had 13 points, sealed Coppin's seventh straight win by hitting a pair of free-throw attempts with 27 seconds left.

Down for much of the game, Howard sent it to overtime with a 25-foot jumper by Melvin Watson with four seconds remaining.

The game was the second overtime outing in a row for the Eagles (9-12, 8-3 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference), who picked up their 22nd win in the last 25 meetings with the Bison (2-18, 2-10). Last Monday, Coppin out-dueled Norfolk State, 95-82.

Warrick, who tied a career high by scoring 34 against Norfolk State, didn't let a week's layoff make him rusty. In the last 7: 28 of the first half, the senior guard from Philadelphia scored 17 of his 28 first-half points.

"I got into a little zone so I was just going to shoot until I missed," Warrick said. "I scored 50 in a high school game, but I never figured I'd score 40 in a college game."

It was this effort that sparked an 18-6 Coppin run as it raced to a 42-39 halftime lead, having made 16 of its 20 field goals.

Past halftime, however, the horse race yielded to a snail's pace as neither team could get anything going early on.

Aside from Dave Libbett's basket with 19: 36 left in the game -- bringing Howard within a point at 42-41 -- neither team hit a field goal until Warrick's three-pointer with 11: 43 remaining gave Coppin a 48-43 lead. Warrick's basket started a 7-0 run that looked to give the Eagles control, capped by a Tyran Watkins dunk that made it 52-43 with 10: 18 left.

But a steal and layup by Ali Abdullah gave Howard a 59-58 lead with 3: 39 left, quickly answered by Jerel Seamon's layup to put Coppin back on top at the 2: 06 mark.

Jermaine Holliway's free throw brought a 60-60 tie with 1: 50 left. Warrick hit three of four free throws before Watson's three-pointer forced the overtime.

In the early going, the Eagles looked very sloppy, with 15 first-half turnovers. Abdullah and Antonio Michell each hit three-pointers for Howard to take a 10-4 lead.

After Abdullah's three-point play gave Howard a 13-4 lead with 14: 18 remaining, Warrick began to heat up. He scored eight points in three minutes, hitting a three-pointer with 10: 21 left that had the Eagles within 19-16. Benefiting from a half-court trap, Coppin went ahead 34-32 with 2: 54 left.

For Howard, Abdullah and Michell had 21 points apiece.
