U.S. Food Service buys Oregon distribution center

U.S. Food Service Inc., a Columbia-based national distributor of food and related products to restaurants and institutions, has purchased a warehouse and distribution center in Ridgefield, Wash., 14 miles north of Portland, Ore.

The purchase will allow the company to develop its markets in the Oregon and Washington areas and expand its product lines to include meat, produce, seafood and dairy.

U.S. Food Service, which employs more than 12,000 workers, markets and distributes 40,000 brand items to more than 130,000 food-service customers.

People

Christopher Cahill, partner in the Columbia-based landscaping company, Botanical Decorators, has become its sole owner. His former partner, Barry Wood, has retired. Cahill joined the company in 1989 as a designer and salesman. He became a partner five years ago. Botanical Decorators specializes in high-end residential landscaping. The firm grossed $3 million in sales last year. Cahill plans to move the firm's headquarters to Olney.

Scott C. Nicholson, senior vice president at the Columbia Bank, has been promoted to head the bank's acquisition, development and construction lending division. He succeeds Charles C. Holman, who announced his retirement from the bank after 11 years of service. Holman has been elected to the bank's boards of directors. Nicholson, who has 20 years of experience in the financial industry, joined the bank in 1993. He will supervise a staff of seven in the bank's Ellicott City offices.
