Following the Birds south for spring training

Baseball: The Orioles will soon head south to play preseason games in the Grapefruit League. Here's a look at the schedule. Destination: Florida

Individual-game tickets can be bought in person at the box office of Fort Lauderdale Stadium at 5301 NW 12th Ave., or ordered from the ticket office there by fax. To obtain an order form, call the box office at 954-776-1921; the fax number is 954-776-9116.

Tickets also are available, with "convenience" fees of about $2.50 a ticket and $2 an order, through TicketMaster-Florida at 954-523-3309, 305-358-5885, or 561-966-3309; and through the Internet at www.ticketmaster.com.

* Minnesota Twins: Fort Myers (135 miles), Hammond Stadium in the Lee County Sports Complex. Prices $11 and $8, plus a handling fee of $1.50 a ticket and $2 an order. Available by calling 800-33-TWINS.

* Boston Red Sox: Fort Myers, City of Palms Park. Prices $11 and $10, plus a $3 handling fee per order. Available by calling the box office at 941-334-4700, or toll-free at 877-733-7699.

* Montreal Expos and St. Louis Cardinals: Jupiter (50 miles). Prices for reserved seats $15, $13, $9. Available through TicketMaster numbers with added fees of $2.75 a ticket and $2.05 an order; or call toll-free at 888-447-4824 for information on buying tickets by mail or fax, for which there is a $4 handling fee per order.

* Los Angeles Dodgers: Vero Beach (111 miles). Prices $11 for all reserved seats. Available by calling the Holman Stadium box office at 561-569-6858. No handling fee; tickets are held for pickup at the will-call window.

* New York Mets: Port St. Lucie (85 miles). Prices for reserved seats $12, $9. Handling fee $1 per order. Available by calling the Mets' Florida ticket office at 561-871-2115.

* Florida Marlins: Viera (150 miles). Prices for reserved seats $12 and $9, and general admission $5. Available by phone through TicketMaster at 407-839-3900, with added fees of $1.75 to $2.50 a ticket and $1.80 an order.

* Philadelphia Phillies: One game scheduled, at 10,500-seat Hoover Metropolitan Stadium in Birmingham, Ala., home of the Chicago White Sox' Double-A affiliate Birmingham Barons. Reserved seats are already sold out; general admission tickets are $15.50. Information: 205-988-3200.

* Atlanta Braves: One game scheduled, at Atlanta's Turner Field, with regular season prices of $33, $27, $16, $11 and $5, plus service charges, available through TicketMaster at 800-326-4000.

In addition, a limited number of "skyline" tickets, priced at $1, go on sale at the Turner Field box office three hours before game time. You won't catch a foul ball way up there, but then again, one buck for Major League Baseball -- it's almost worth a flight to Atlanta just for the novelty of it.

If you're traveling in Florida or Arizona, there's plenty of preseason major-league baseball to be found from early March into the first week of April.

Complete major-league spring training schedules are expected to be available on the Internet by early February at www.majorleaguebaseball.com, and many of the teams have Web sites. The Orioles, for example, can be found at www.theorioles.com.
