Vernon Berg 3d, 47, an artist who was one of the first officers to stand up to the military after he was discharged for being homosexual, died in New York on Wednesday of complications from AIDS.

A Naval Academy graduate, he sued the Navy after being given an "other than honorable" discharge as an ensign in 1976 when an investigation revealed he was involved in a gay relationship. His discharge was upgraded to "honorable" as a result, and the armed forces later adopted a policy of generally granting honorable discharges to homosexuals.

Bill Crofut ,64, a musician who recorded more than 20 albums and whose repertoire stretched from Bach to blues and beyond, died of cancer Monday in Sandisfield, Mass.

James M. "Jimmy" Domengeaux ,44, a guitarist with the Grammy-nominated band Steve Riley & The Mamou Playboys, died Monday in a motorcycle accident in New Iberia, La.

Gonzalo Torrente Ballester, 88, a major figure in Spanish contemporary literature whose novels blended realism with fantasy, died Wednesday in Madrid, Spain. In 1985, he won the Cervantes Prize for Literature.
