Silver Charm favored in Donn, first in 11-race series on Fox

Silver Charm helps launch an inaugural "NTRA Champions on Fox" series today on the Fox network that will conclude Aug. 29 with the Pacific Classic at Del Mar.

Despite breaking from the far outside and conceding six to 16 pounds to his 11 rivals, Silver Charm is the 8-5 morning-line favorite in the $500,000 Donn Handicap, a 1 1/8-mile Grade I stakes at Gulfstream Park.

The race will be televised on Fox (Chs. 45, 5) beginning at 4 p.m.

The series of 11 races is designed to showcase the nation's older horses as they compete for millions of dollars in bonuses.

The National Thoroughbred Racing Association, the new "league office" of horse racing, hopes the series attracts new fans and helps propel racing toward the NTRA goal of becoming one of the country's top five sports.

The Donn Handicap is the first beneficiary, attracting a surprisingly large field and the sports' only bona fide star: Silver Charm. His challengers include Sir Bear, Puerto Madero, Littlebitlively and Frisk Me Now.

NOTE: Answer Lively, winner of the 1998 Breeders' Cup Juvenile, takes his first steps toward the Kentucky Derby today in the Lecomte Handicap at Fair Grounds in New Orleans. No winner of the Breeders' Cup Juvenile has ever won the Kentucky Derby.
