Pops grocery is shut only temporarily

store to reopen in March, owner says

January 29, 1999|BY A SUN STAFF WRITER

The owner of Pops, a popular family-owned grocery store in Savage, said yesterday he closed his store temporarily and plans to reopen it in March, fully stocked with everything from ice cream to soda.

Jake Croston, who has operated the store in the 9100 block of Baltimore St. since 1981, said business tends to pick up in the spring.

"A lot of the children tend to come in here after school and when the weather gets nice," Croston said.

In the month ahead, he said, he will eliminate some products from his store, such as canned goods that would put him in direct competition with the Weis supermarket that opened on U.S. 1 at Gorman Road on Wednesday.
