A 27-year-old Cockeysville woman who had just gotten her hair done at a Columbia salon was abducted at gunpoint in a carjacking Wednesday night before escaping unharmed, Howard County police said.

Laura Beth Russell of the first block of Beehive Place was walking to her 1996 Acura Legend outside the Spoiled Rotten hair salon on Minstrel Way in Owen Brown about 8: 30 p.m. when a stocky man with a handgun approached her, robbed her of a small amount of cash and drove away with her in her car, police Cpl. Glenn Case said.

The assailant demanded the woman's ATM card and drove her to the NationsBank in Owen Brown Village Center, where he tried unsuccessfully to withdraw money from the automated teller machine.

Russell tried to flee from the car, and the two struggled as the man started driving through the village center parking lot.

Police said the woman escaped on Dockside Lane, where she banged on the door of a house and called 911.

Russell suffered minor bruises on her legs and arms, police said, but declined to be taken to a hospital.

Russell's car was recovered undamaged yesterday in a parking lot on Patuxent Woods Drive.
