Edith E. Backman, 78, Colonial Pharmacy cashier

Edith Elizabeth Backman, a retired cashier at the old Colonial Pharmacy in Northwest Baltimore, died of heart failure Wednesday at the home of a daughter in Fernandina Beach, Fla., where she had lived for three years. She was 78.

She retired three years ago after working at the pharmacy, on Reisterstown Road near the city-Baltimore County line, as a cashier for more than 36 years. She lived in the Colonial Village area near the pharmacy.

A native of Indiana, the former Edith McDonaldson married William Raymond Backman in 1942; he died in 1950.

A graveside service was held yesterday.

She is survived by a son, William Patrick Backman of Arbutus; a daughter, Marlene Louise Crum of Fernandina Beach; and three grandchildren.
