Community meetings to gather input on county master plan

TOWSON -- Open houses to gather community input for the county's master plan will be held tonight at three schools and Wednesday night at two others.

Meetings will be held at Western School of Technology and Environmental Science, 100 Kenwood Ave., for District 1; at Owings Mills High School, 124 Tollgate Road, for District 3; and at Golden Ring Middle School, in the 6700 block of Kenwood Ave., for District 5.

The meetings Wednesday will be at Carver Center for Arts and Technology, 938 North York Road, for District 4; and Hereford High School, 17301 York Road, for the rural areas. All five meetings will start at 7: 30 p.m. Information: 410-887-3211.

Air Force officer discusses success at high school

ESSEX -- Eastern Technical High School kicked off its participation Friday in GTE Corp. "Life's Playbook Program" with a speech from Lt. Col. Michelle Johnson.

Johnson, the Air Force Academy's career scoring leader in women's basketball and its first female cadet wing commander and Rhodes Scholar, talked to the 1,350 pupils about how to achieve success in academics, athletics and life.

More than 30 members of the GTE Academic All-American Hall of Fame are speaking to schools around the country as part of the program, which aims to bring advice to teen-agers from individuals who have achieved success and can serve as role models.
