Jay Pritzker, 76, founder of Hyatt chain Jay Pritzker, founder of the Hyatt hotel chain and one of the richest men in the nation, died of a heart attack yesterday in Chicago. He was 76.

Ranked last year by Forbes as the 20th-richest American with a fortune of $5 billion, Mr. Pritzker started with one hotel and turned it into Hyatt Corp., one of the world's largest chains with more than 200 hotels and resorts worldwide.

He had been involved in family dealings with the city of Baltimore during the late 1970s to build the city's first "convention hotel" -- with then-controversial government aid -- at the Inner Harbor.

Mr. Pritzker and his brother Robert's philanthropic efforts included $70 million donated to various causes in 1996, according to Fortune magazine.
