Whitaker, Mount hold off Monmouth

Melvin Whitaker scored 15 points to lead four players in double figures and help host Mount St. Mary's hold off a second-half rally by Monmouth for a 72-67 Northeast Conference victory last night.

Gregory Harris scored 14, Tony Hayden 14 and Terrence Wilson 10 on 10-for-14 shooting from the free-throw line. The Mountaineers (8-10, 6-6) made 22 of 32 free-throw attempts. The Hawks (0-17, 0-11) went to the line seven times, making two.

Alpha Bangura led Monmouth with 25 points.

Mary Washington 97, Villa Julie 80: Bobby Frazitta scored 23 and George Bunch 21 to power the host Eagles (7-6) past the Mustangs (1-14) in Fredericksburg, Va.

Mary Washington built a 50-41 halftime lead. Michael Palmere led Villa Julie with 21.
