Municipal band holds end-of-year celebration

The Westminster Municipal Band held a year-end party recently to celebrate its 1998 activities.

The band participated in 40 events, including eight county firemen's parades, the St. Patrick's Day and Firehouse Magazine Expo parades in Baltimore, and several holiday parades in the area.

Band members also played for the opening of the new Westminster firehouse, and at the Maryland and Delaware state firemen's parades.

Years-of-service certificates were presented to members Walter Myers Jr., 60 years; Sterling Byers, 55 years; William Myers, Jean Haines, 50 years; Dave Brauning, Jonah Kibler, 40 years; Norman Myers, 25 years; Scott Flohr, Steve Hossler, Jim Wantz, 20 years; Robert Griesmyer, Blaine Flickinger, Gene White, 15 years; and Ted Dix, Joan Wantz, Jay Clingan, Lisa Warner, five years.

Top 10 awards were presented to members making the most events and rehearsals. In addition to the 40 events, the band held 28 rehearsals. Winners received gift certificates from area businesses.

Top band members and the number of appearances were: Mike Buffington, 68; Dave Miller, 67; George West, 65; Eric Utermahlen, 63; Bette Schreiner, 62; George Arbaugh, 60; Larry Myers, 59; Sandy Miller, 53; Joe Arbaugh, 50; Ted Dix, 49.

Top color guard members were Raymond Bankert and Charlie Simpson, making 27 appearances each.

The band rehearses from 7: 30 p.m. to 9: 30 p.m. Mondays at the old Westminster Armory on Longwell Avenue. Anyone high school age or older who plays an instrument is welcome.

Fire

Westminster: Firefighters responded at 4: 14 a.m. Sunday to an automatic alarm on East Main Street. Units were out 30 minutes.
