Minnick elected to chair county's House delegation

ANNAPOLIS -- Joseph J. "Sonny" Minnick, a Dundalk Democrat, has been elected chairman of the 27-member Baltimore County House delegation in Annapolis.

James E. Malone Jr., whose district includes parts of Baltimore and Howard counties, was elected vice chairman, and Katherine Klausmeier, who represents parts of Perry Hall, White Marsh and Baltimore City, was elected secretary. The votes were unanimous.

Hereford High exams pushed back because of ice storm

HEREFORD -- Last week's ice storm has caused semester exams at Hereford High School to be delayed until Thursday.

Pupils had been scheduled to begin taking exams Wednesday. Classes are canceled today for the Martin Luther King Jr. Day holiday and tomorrow for staff training for teachers.

Pupils missed the scheduled two days of exam review because of the storm, said school spokesman Charles Herndon. The principal decided to delay exams by one day to give them time to study.

School board sets dates for budget meetings

TOWSON -- The county school board has set the dates for its meetings on the system's operating budget for the 1999-2000 school year.

The superintendent's proposed operating budget -- which had been scheduled to be released last week-- will be presented to the school board at 7: 30 p.m. Jan. 26.

The board is scheduled to hold a public hearing on the spending plan Feb. 2, discuss it in a work session Feb. 8, and vote on the budget Feb. 23.

Police officer injured when car hits utility pole

A police officer on his way to help other officers pursue a stolen auto was injured yesterday when his patrol car struck a utility pole in Southwest Baltimore.

Sgt. Scott Rowe, a police spokesman, said Officer Raymond K. Betag, 29, of the Southwestern District was driving a 1996 Ford Crown Victoria north in the 500 block of S. Caton Ave. about 3: 30 a.m. when he struck the utility pole at the intersection with Strickland Street. Rowe said Betag suffered chest injuries. He was treated at Maryland Shock Trauma Center and released.

Rowe said it was not known what caused the accident and an investigation was continuing.

Parks & People Foundation seeks grant applicants

The nonprofit Parks & People Foundation is seeking applicants for grants of up to $1,000 for community environmental projects.

Grants will be awarded to community groups for such projects as planting trees and wildflowers and cleaning up community spaces, or helping in the development of the Gwynns Falls Trail. The application deadline is Feb. 5.

City school board to hold an open community forum

The Baltimore City Board of School Commissioners will hold a citywide community forum from 5: 30 p.m. to 8 p.m. tomorrow at Hamilton Elementary-Middle School, 6101 Old Harford Road.
