Breakfast honors King

More than 900 people crowded a banquet room at Martin's West for the 14th annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Scholarship Breakfast given by the Howard L. Cornish Metropolitan Baltimore Chapter of the Morgan State University Alumni Association. The event honored the slain civil rights leader through praise, song and fellowship.

The Rev. Vashti McKenzie of Payne Memorial A.M.E. Church was guest speaker. Fifteen scholarships were given to local students, 10 from Nestle USA and five from the alumni chapter.

The chapter also honored six people with Howard L. Cornish Awards: G. Beatrice Reid Hurt, Morgan University Women, Appreciation Award; Dr. Hilbert D. Stanley, immediate past president of the Morgan State University National Alumni Association, Appreciation Award; Dr. Odessa D. Dorkins, founder Maryland Centenarians Committee, Humanitarian Award; Gaynell Colburn, Telsie B. Howard Foundation Inc., Community Service Award; Clarice F. Lee, the local alumni chapter's historian and financial secretary, Drum Major Award; and Gloria Braxton, the chapter's second vice president, Distinguished Service Award.
