WAS ONE OF YOUR New Year's resolutions to become more involved in the community?

A good first step is to join the Severna Park Newcomers Club.

It's not just for new residents anymore. Women interested in making friends and participating in a variety of activities are welcome.

Members meet for lunch and to hear a speaker on the third Wednesday of the month. The meeting next week begins at 11: 30 a.m. at Cafe Mezzanotte on Ritchie Highway, when the speaker will be Gail Provencher, a certified registered nurse practitioner in Severna Park.

She will talk about breast cancer prevention and detection, with an emphasis on nutrition, which can be a contributing factor to breast cancer and one over which people control.

Academy open house

Chesapeake Academy has planned its winter admissions open house for 8: 30 a.m. to 2: 30 p.m. Jan. 26.

The Arnold school offers a curriculum designed to "educate the entire child": art, music, physical education, library, Spanish and computer science, in addition to regular academic studies.

Information: 410-647-9612.

Receipts wanted

The collection of grocery store receipts from Giant Food, Metro and Safeway continues through next month.

Public and private schools redeem the receipts for educational equipment, from computers to musical instruments to sports gear.

Severna Park Middle School is also participating in a program sponsored by General Mills called Big G Boxtops for Education.

General Mills box tops will be accepted through March.

Oak Hill Elementary is one of many schools participating in Target stores' Take Charge of Education program.

When merchandise is charged on a Target credit card, 1 percent of the purchase total is sent to the school the purchaser selects.

Register for this program by calling Target at 800-316-6142.

Wedding anniversaries

Congratulations to two Severna Park couples on their wedding anniversaries: on Jan. 5, Bob and Anne Donaldson, No. 55; and on Jan. 7, Fred and Estelle Rietschel, No. 53.
