'Radio From Downtown'

Relive the days when the family gathered around the radio to listen to the news, music and variety shows when "Radio From Downtown" presents the live taping of such a radio program Saturday at the Avalon Theater in Easton. The show, to be broadcast from local radio stations at a later date, features hammered dulcimer player Maggie Sansone, Chesapeake region photographer David Harp and the David Julian Gray Klezmer Ensemble. Also part of the program are a discussion on the bay and poetry readings by waterman Fred Pomeroy and an original radio play with live sound effects and music featuring the Downtown Players, including Susan Stamberg and Carl Kasell of National Public Radio.

The show starts at 7:30 p.m. at 40 E. Dover St. Tickets are $13 in advance and $15 at the door. Call 410-822-0345.

Lighthouse celebration

Discover the beauty and diversity of lighthouses during "Winter Lights: A Celebration of Chesapeake Bay Lighthouses," an all-day festival Saturday at the Calvert Marine Museum, Solomons Island. The program includes tours of area lighthouses and displays from various organizations representing lighthouses of the upper and lower bay and its tributaries, including Cove Point Light, Old and New Cape Henry Lights, Piney Point, Hooper Strait Light, and Drum Point Light. A living history interpreter will take visitors back to 1910 and re-create what it was like to live in Drum Point Light during its time of active duty. Visitors also have the rare opportunity to visit the Cove Point Light Station. Lighthouse-related book signings and gingerbread lighthouse baking contests also are part of the festivities.

The celebration takes place from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is $5, $4 seniors, $2 children, under 5 free. An additional $1 for shuttle buses and admission to the Cove Point Light Station. Buses leave the museum at 11 a.m., 1 p.m, and 3 p.m. Call 410-326-2042.
