The son of a woman who, along with her husband, was beaten to death in their home in the rural Carroll County community of Frizzellburg Dec. 29, was arrested last night and charged with two counts of first-degree murder.

The motive, said Capt. Greg Shipley, a State Police spokesman, appeared to be domestic-related.

Held at the Carroll County Detention Center without bail pending a hearing today in District Court is Gary D. Starnes, 48, who lived in the home in the 1400 block of Warehime Road with his mother, Barbara Lorraine Ries Garrity, 67, and her husband, Joseph Sid Garrity, 68, a retired Baltimore City police officer.

Shipley said Starnes was arrested at Carroll County General Hospital about 8 p.m. on a warrant after investigators gathered probable cause evidence that included physical evidence and information gathered during the investigation of the killings. The Garritys were found in separate bathtubs at the home.

Shipley would not elaborate on the evidence or say what Starnes was doing at the hospital.
