THE NEW YEAR CAN BE a time for making resolutions for self-improvements or starting fresh with things you enjoy.

As I've written in this column in past years, I'm generally not one for resolutions, but the host of fit and fun programs being offered by area recreation councils might inspire me to charge into 1999 with a flurry of activity.

Baseball time

Get out the bats, gloves and balls -- baseball is just around the corner. Registration for Sykesville Baseball will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday and Jan. 16, 23 and 30 in Center Court at Carrolltown Center. Those registering late are not guaranteed a team placement.

The league offers T-ball for age 5, intramural teams for ages 6 through 18, and travel and tournament teams. Babe Ruth League is available for ages 16 through 18 and Metro League for ages 11 through 16.

Umpire Training School registration will be held concurrently for ages 12 and older. Training sessions are scheduled from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Feb. 7, 14, 21, 28, and March 7 and 14.

For more information on baseball or umpiring, call the baseball hot line at 410-795-8047.

Optimist softball

The Freedom Optimist Girls Softball program will accept registration from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday and Jan. 16, 23 and 30 in Carrolltown's Center Court.

Registration for the Sykesville Slammers Fast Pitch softball will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Jan. 16, 23 and 30 in front of the Community Room at Carrolltown Center.

The Slammers offer fast-pitch teams for girls in divisions 12, 14 and high school.

The Slammers will hold the annual Fast Pitch Instructional Clinic from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Sundays, starting Jan. 10 through March 14.

The clinic is open to all girls ages 8 to 18 who want to learn fielding, hitting techniques and batting stances.

A one-time registration fee of $20 is payable at sign-up. Professional pitching instruction will be offered for nine weeks with Buddy Weiderman at a cost of $50.

Pitchers are asked to bring their catchers.

Sykesville Slammers team registration will be discounted $5 for all clinic participants.
