Frankford Intermediate sets reading goal of 30,000 books.

Frankford Intermediate School makes no secret of its reading goal. The school, with pupils in grades four to six, launched it recently on a huge sign over the main entrance -- 30,000 books by June.

About a sixth of Frankford's 300 pupils take part in a before-school reading academy, held from 7: 45 a.m. to 8: 45 a.m. Mondays through Thursdays. Each pupil also is required to read 10 books a month, with parents overseeing a logbook charting their progress.

Pupils drafted news releases in class to announce the new sign. "Frankford Intermediate School thinks that reading is more important than anything else," one said, noting that pupils are rewarded with movies, trips and other activities. "So come by and check out the new banner."

Parkville Middle pupils join reader incentive program

PARKVILLE -- Pupils at Parkville Middle School are participating in a reading incentive program this school year to encourage them to choose reading as a leisure-time activity.

All pupils have received a "reading log" to track the time they spend reading. Pupils who read for a designated amount of time win small gifts or coupons donated by local businesses.

Parkville Middle is looking for businesses to donate incentives to the program. Information: 410- 887-5250.

Delegate helps launch school's reading competition

REISTERSTOWN -- Reisterstown Elementary School has launched its participation in the Reading Across Maryland competition.

Newly elected Del. Robert A. Zirkin, a District 11 Democrat, joined the school for the recent kickoff and told pupils about the importance of reading in his life.

Reisterstown pupils, like those in other schools throughout the state, will document their reading progress until March 31 on Reading Across Maryland bookmarks and receive certificates for meeting the contest's challenges.
