College soccer coach wins regional honor

December 30, 1998

The National Soccer Coaches Association of America has named Scott Peavler of Glen Burnie, coach of the women's soccer team at Anne Arundel Community College, its Mid-Atlantic Coach of the Year.

Peavler will receive his award at a luncheon for college coaches Jan. 21 during the association's convention in Philadelphia. He remains one of three finalists for the NSCAA/Adidas Coach of the Year award, which will be presented at a banquet Jan. 22.

Four members of Peavler's team were Maryland junior college and regional first-team selections. They are: sophomore midfielder Betty Trevino, Maryland junior college Player of the Year and a second-team All-America choice; freshman defender Lorie Zamarripa, an All-America honorable mention; freshman forward Polly Williams (23 goals, six assists); and sophomore forward Catherine Larsen (13 goals, four assists).

This year saw the highest finish for the college's women's soccer team in 10 years. The team is undefeated in conference play the past two years, and their coach has been Maryland junior college Coach of the Year both seasons.
