December 28, 1998

Sandro Cherchi, 87, a sculptor who helped start an anti-fascist artistic movement in Italy in the 1930s, has died, Italian television reported Saturday.

Born in Genoa in 1911, he moved to Milan in 1936, and two years later helped found the artistic and literary movement known as "Corrente," or Current.

Wang Ganchang, 90, the scientist credited with founding China's atomic bomb program, died Dec. 10 in Beijing.
