Laurel weekend

December 26, 1998

Today The Challedon Stakes, which drew only five entrants, precedes two divisions of the Maryland Juvenile Championships. Greenspring Willy and Purple Passion will meet in a rubber match in the $60,000 Challedon. Greenspring Willy avenged a loss in the Lite The Fuse Stakes by beating Purple Passion in the Bowie Stakes. Both Juvenile Championships carry $100,000 purses and will be contested at 1 1/8 miles. Pettit's Quest and Red Star Rose, 1-2 finishers in the Rollicking Stakes, resume their rivalry in the colt and gelding division. Magic Broad, winner of the Grade III Selima, heads the filly event.

Tomorrow

Godmother is the lone member of the Kattegat's Pride Stakes with a victory in an added- money event. The daughter of Show'am Slew won Delaware Park's Blue Hen before earning minor shares in four subsequent stakes. The $75,000 event, which has lured 11 2-year-old fillies, will be contested over seven furlongs.
