TOWSON — A woman who police have not been able to identify was killed yesterday afternoon in East Baltimore when she was run over by a 7-ton tractor-trailer cab while crossing the street.

Baltimore Police Lt. Glenn D. Williams said the woman was crossing Greenmount Avenue at E. North Avenue about noon when a light turned green and the truck driver started through the intersection. Williams said the driver did not stop until witnesses yelled that he had hit someone. "Then, in a panic, he backed up," striking the woman again, Williams said.

The victim was pronounced dead at Johns Hopkins Hospital at 12: 40 p.m.

The driver was identified as Gary Whitaker, 38, of the 1300 block of East Northern Parkway. No charges had been filed as of yesterday.

TOWSON -- The car driven by a man who was found dead in the storage room of a Pikesville apartment complex was found at Fort Belvoir, Va., yesterday, Baltimore County police said.

The body of Wayne Lydell Gathings, 40, of the 3400 block of Erdman Ave. was discovered by a resident of the complex on Tent Mill Lane on Monday. No obvious signs of trauma were found, and the cause of death has not been determined.

The two men driving the car, a 1994 four-door Toyota, dark blue with Maryland tag TMG 722, were arrested on unrelated charges, said police spokesman Bill Toohey. The men's names and the charges against them were not available yesterday.

Van's driver is sought in attempted rape on I-83

TOWSON

TOWSON -- County police are searching for the driver of a decrepit white van who another motorist said tried to rape her on Interstate 83 Thursday afternoon.

The man is described as a white male between age 30 and 40, with long blond hair, a fair complexion and a thin build. He was driving an older model white panel van, with the right wheel well rusting away, bubble windows on the rear door windows and a ladder rack.

Police said the van forced a car driven by a 24-year-old woman from Pikesville off the road about 2: 45 p.m. Thursday. The woman said she got out of her car, and the van driver ordered her into the van at gunpoint and tried to rape her. After a third motorist stopped and knocked on the van's windows, the assailant pushed the woman out of the van and drove away. Anyone with information should call Baltimore County police at 410-887-2198.
