Live Nativity set at Calvary United Methodist Church

THE JUNIOR UNITED Methodist Youth Fellowship will celebrate the Christmas season with a live Nativity before the morning service Sunday at Calvary United Methodist Church.

"It's something to get people into the Christmas spirit, and we wanted to welcome people into the church in a special way," said organizer Clydia Koch.

Shepherds with a live lamb will greet people from 9 a.m. to 9: 30 a.m. and 10: 30 a.m. to 11 a.m. as they enter the church for services.

A Nativity will be set up behind the church near the parking lot, and a "Bethlehem Inn" will provide refreshments such as tea, cookies and hot bread.

Beanie Baby raffle

The Dapper Pet Den will raffle a Valentino Beanie Baby on Monday at its store in the Twin Arch Shopping Center, at Route 27 and Twin Arch Road.

All proceeds will benefit Mount Airy NET and its efforts to provide food and other emergency assistance to community members.

Musical Christmas

"Night of Wonder," a Christmas celebration presented by the adult and youth choirs of Prospect United Methodist Church, will be held at 7 p.m. Sunday and 7 p.m. Thursday at the church, 5923 Woodville Road in Mount Airy.

Admission to the Thursday program is a nonperishable food item to benefit the local food bank for Mount Airy NET, a community emergency assistance organization.

VFW New Year's party

Veterans of Foreign Wars Counties Four Memorial Post 10076 will hold a New Year's Eve party for members and their guests from 8 p.m. to 1 a.m. at its 111 S. Main St. location in Mount Airy.

Dress is casual, and food will be served at 11 p.m. D.J. Orvil Magers will provide music.

American Legion party

The American Legion will hold a New Year's Eve party at its Gold Star Post 191 on Prospect Road in Mount Airy from 8: 30 p.m. to 12: 30 a.m.

The event is for adults, only with a cash bar all evening, snacks and party favors. Music will be performed by the Wichita Falls band.

Admission is $15 per person or $25 per couple.

Open Mic Night

The Firehouse Pub and Grill at 233 S. Main St. in Mount Airy offers an Open Mic Night from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. Thursdays.

Poetry reading, singing, playing an acoustic instrument or acting can be be provided.

Ballet and tap classes

The Woodbine Recreation Council will offer ballet and tap classes for 4- to 10-year-olds and older Mondays, starting Jan. 4. The classes will run 10 weeks.

The 3- to 4-year-old class will be held from 10 a.m. to 10: 45 a.m. at Calvary United Methodist Church on Main Street, Mount Airy. Cost is $55.

All other classes will be held at the Mount Airy Senior Center, 703 Ridge Ave. Classes for 5- and 6-year-olds will be held at 5 p.m.

The 7- and 8-year-old class will be held at 6 p.m.

The 9 and older class will be held at 7 p.m.
