Man charged with attempted murder after woman asked for directions

December 15, 1998|BY A SUN STAFF WRITER

A Harford County man was arrested and charged with attempted murder yesterday after a woman who stopped for directions at a Wendy's restaurant was lured into following another driver and attacked, state police said. Kevin Cordell Benjamin, 31, of the 1700 block of Ironwood Court in Edgewood was also charged with first-degree assault. Police said he promised to help Rita Anne Buffington, 56, of Baltimore, find a relative's house in Towson.

Police said Buffington stopped at a Wendy's on U.S. 40 in Joppatowne where Benjamin was working. Benjamin wrote directions for Buffington and offered to show her the way by having her follow him, police said.

Two vehicles stopped on the shoulder of Interstate 95 near White Marsh, and, police said, a man forced his way into Buffington's car and stabbed her in the neck before fleeing.

Buffington was found in her car by a passing motorist and taken to Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center, where she was listed in serious condition yesterday. Benjamin was arrested at his job yesterday without incident and taken to the Baltimore County Detention Center.
