Quotable

"My obligation is not to Kordell Stewart. My obligation is to this football team. I'm going to make decisions I think are in the best interests of this football team."

-- Bill Cowher, Steelers coach, on benching an ineffective Stewart, who lobbied to be put back in.

"We were happy when [Ryan Leaf] came onto the field. He looked kind of scared, and he threw some balls that weren't even professional. I'm not trying to be cruel; I'm just trying to be honest."

-- Jay Bellamy, Seahawks strong safety, who had two interceptions.

"One week we play great. The next week it's like we never heard of the game."

-- William Roaf, Saints tackle.

Injury report

Jamie Martin, Jaguars QB: Sprained right knee. Did not return.

Tony Banks, Rams QB: Torn medial collateral ligament in left knee. Out for season.

Terry Glenn, Patriots WR: Fractured right ankle.

Raghib Ismail, Panthers WR: Strained knee. Did not return.

By the numbers

Records: Vikings kicker Gary Anderson set an NFL record with his 32nd straight field goal, breaking the mark of 31 straight set by Fuad Reviez of the Vikings from 1994 to 1995. Colts quarterback Peyton Manning set NFL rookie records with 502 attempts, 286 completions and 23 touchdown passes for the season. He also extended his rookie records to 3,179 yards passing and 11 straight games with at least one touchdown pass. The Seahawks returned an interception and a fumble for touchdowns to set an NFL record for most touchdowns (12) off turnovers in a season. With two field goals and three extra points, the Falcons' Morten Andersen has 106 points for the season, the 12th time he has scored 100 points or more. Nick Lowery and Gary Anderson each had been tied with Andersen for the NFL record with 11.

Streak: Eagles kicker Chris Boniol's streak of 67 field goals without a miss from inside 35 yards was broken when he was wide right on a 33-yard attempt in the fourth quarter.

HTC Milestones: Manning is the first Colts quarterback with more than 3,000 yards passing in a season since Bert Jones in 1981. Cortez Kennedy, Seattle's six-time Pro Bowl defensive tackle playing his ninth season, got his first career touchdown. The Falcons' Jamal Anderson had his 10th 100-yard rushing game this season. The Seahawks' Ricky Watters became the first player in NFL history to get 1,000 rushing yards in a season for three teams. He also did it for the 49ers and Eagles.

Ups: After intercepting five passes in their first 13 games, the Bucs picked off four against the Steelers. The Bills defense has allowed fewer than 100 yards rushing in eight games this season, including each of the past five.

Downs: The Chargers set a franchise record by getting intercepted seven times. The Cowboys have not won in December since beating the Vikings in the NFC wild-card game on Dec. 28, 1996.

Next week

Jets (10-4) at Bills (9-5): The Jets could clinch the AFC East with a victory.

Broncos (13-1) at Dolphins (9-5): Ouch. The Dolphins get the Broncos, who just lost their bid for a perfect season.
