Weather Vane's aim is true Bay locates rail, wins Contrary Rose at Laurel

December 14, 1998|By FROM STAFF REPORTS

Weather Vane won the sixth running of the Contrary Rose Stakes yesterday at Laurel Park when Mario Pino steered the bay daughter of Willard Scott to her sixth win this year in 1 minute, 10 4/5 seconds over a sloppy track.

"She can't run hard every race," Pino said, referring to Weather Vane's loss last time out in New York, "but today, once I had committed myself to the rail, I just had to go to the lead. She fought off two horses and ran a nice little race."

Pino had four winners on the 10-race card.

"We thought it was time to try New York, but it was a little mistake," trainer Richard Delp said. "We're better off here in Maryland. Possibly, she will race again this winter."

Defending champ Crab Grass finished second in the six-furlong race after tracking the field down the backstretch and rallying around the turn for home. Clandestine Caller was third.

Weather Vane paid $3.80. The 2-1 exacta returned $5.80.
