Teen charged with attempted murder as adult

December 13, 1998

A Baltimore 17-year-old is being charged as an adult with attempted first- and second-degree murder and assault, accused of trying to run down two Anne Arundel County police officers, officials said yesterday.

Donald E. Hunker Jr. of the 2400 block of Harriett Ave. and a 14-year-old companion were in a stolen minivan the officers pulled over about 4: 30 a.m. Friday on Winterson Road in Linthicum, police said.

Hunker then "drove toward the officers in an apparent attempt to run them over," police said. The officers -- Robert Burkindine and Todd Melham -- fired 13 shots at the van.

The suspects, who were not injured, were captured later Friday in the Brooklyn area.

The 14-year-old boy was charged as a juvenile with theft over $300, as was Hunker, said Sgt. Joseph Jordan.
