Moving on

FOUR YEARS ago, then-County Executive John G. Gary was criticized for purchasing a dark blue 1994 Mercury Grand Marquis to use as his official car. One newspaper editorialized that it was wrong for the newly elected county executive to be squandering tax dollars on "a luxury car."

A few days after his defeat at the polls, Gary decided to buy a new car. Last week, as he walked to lunch in Annapolis, he proudly showed off his purchase -- a pale lime-green Lincoln Town Car. "That," he said, pointing to his new vehicle, "is a luxury car."

ON A recent trip to Marley Station Mall in Glen Burnie, I found myself in line with a retired couple who were purchasing a small stuffed reindeer that played a tinny rendition of "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" when squeezed. A promotional item sold by the store, the toys were stacked next to the register.

"Isn't Rudolph cute!" the customer noted to her husband as she squeezed the toy again.

"Oh, yes," agreed the saleswoman cheerfully without missing a beat. "And by the end of the day I'm ready to disembowel him."

Run, run, Rudolph.

Fruity slogan

A DOZEN members of a county-city relations committee were sitting at a table in Annapolis recently, when one bemoaned the lack of affordable housing in the county.

"It's just NIMBY all the time," he said, referring to the acronym for "Not In My Back Yard" that has kept affordable housing out of wealthy neighborhoods.

Across the table another adviser nodded earnestly and one-upped him.

"Exactly," he said, "except it's not NIMBY any more, it's BANANA."

BANANA?

"Build Anything Nowhere And Nothing Anywhere."

Ought to be the new county slogan.

Electronic shopping

WHAT BETTER way for an 11-year-old kid to escape a mind-numbing shopping trip with his mother than to head for the store's electronics department and fire up the display model of Nintendo PlayStation?

If only the technology-challenged shoppers would leave him alone.

Stationed in front of a display television hooked up to a Nintendo PlayStation in the BJ's Warehouse electronics department in Pasadena on Wednesday, 11-year-old Lucas attracted the attention of several women shoppers.

But it wasn't his deft skill in guiding a little green and blue lizard through a Gothic obstacle course in the game Gex that impressed them. Turns out Lucas, dressed in the requisite oversized jeans and plaid work shirt of kids his age, looked to the women like the perfect person to advise them on where to find electronic goodies for the men and boys on their lists.

One woman interrupted his point gathering to ask him where he recommended getting a compact-disc player for her husband to take on business trips. His expert advice? Radio Shack or Best Buy.
