Howard County police are seeking a 19-year-old North Laurel man wanted in the shooting death Thursday night of a Columbia man, police said yesterday.

The man, Kevin Anthony Lee of the 9200 block of Livery Lane, is believed to have ties to the Washington area, police said.

Police have released few details about the death of Donald Ray Mitchell, 43, in a North Laurel apartment.

They said Mitchell was visiting a man who lives in the Seasons Apartment Complex, in the 9500 block of Sylvan Still Road, when three other men arrived. An argument ensued, and Mitchell was shot once in the upper chest, police said.

After the shooting, the man who lives in the apartment fled and called authorities, police said.

Police think the shooting might have been related to drugs, said Sgt. Morris Carroll, a police spokesman.

Little was known about the man who was killed. Neighbors said Mitchell was a nice man with a young son. His wife, Irie, works for Mary Kay cosmetics, they said.

Residents of the apartments said they had seen Mitchell's black BMW pull into the apartment's parking lot several times in recent months. The car would stop and someone would walk outside and speak to the driver, neighbors said.

Other times, Mitchell would enter the apartment for short stays, they said.

A man who lives in the apartment where the shooting occurred said he was on a business trip Thursday night.

"This is a quiet neighborhood," said the man, who identified himself only as Adrian. "I'm shocked this would happen here."
