'Breakfast with Santa' at St. Michael's

THE KNIGHTS OF Columbus will sponsor "Breakfast with Santa" from 8 a.m to 10: 30 a.m. Saturday at St. Michael's Roman Catholic Church of Poplar Springs, four miles east of Mount Airy off Route 144.

Two Santa sittings with breakfast will be offered. The first Santa breakfast will be held from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. and the second from 9: 30 a.m. to 10: 30 a.m.

The menu will feature pancakes, sausage, applesauce, juices, coffee, tea and hot chocolate. Cost is $2.50 for children and $4 for adults, and reservations are required.

A Santa Shop will be open and will feature gifts that children can buy for family members. The gifts are reasonably priced, with most $4 or less. Middle-school students will be on hand to assist youngsters with their purchases and to help make gift bags for presents.

Visitors can buy baked goods, enter raffles and purchase children's videos. Parents should bring cameras.

Parents' night out

Calvary United Methodist Church Sunday school will sponsor "Night of Christmas Fun" for children ages 4 to 10 from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Dec. 19 at the church, 403 S. Main St., Mount Airy.

Christmas crafts, games, snacks and movies will be provided for children while parents go out for dinner, shopping or a movie, or just take a night off. Parents are asked to provide dinner for children before taking them to the church.

Donations to Calvary Sunday School are appreciated. To participate, parents must register their children at the church by

Girl Scout party

Girl Scouts and senior citizens will get together for their annual holiday party from 3: 30 p.m. to 6: 30 p.m. Monday at the Mount Airy Senior Center, 703 Ridge Ave.

Girl Scout Troops 652 and 1002 from Mount Airy will play bingo, sing, serve dinner, line dance and make crafts with seniors during the holiday celebration.

Troop 1002 will donate a gingerbread house to the senior center.

Troop 652 includes leader Stacy Roelands and Scouts Leah Roelands, Erin Yokay, Kirsten Hiortdahl, Chris Rhodes and Amber Lipps.

Troop 1002 includes leader Gail Dziorny and Scouts Kara Czeh, Laura Dziorny, Holly Frederickson, Rachel King and Marissa McDermott.

Dziorny says, "The girls really enjoy doing something like this because both they and the seniors have a great time."

Senior events

Mount Airy Senior Center will sponsor several other events next week.

Christmas carols will be sung by preschool children at 10: 30 a.m. Monday, before the Girl Scout holiday celebration at 3: 30 p.m.

A "Paint a Snowman" craft class will be offered at 9 a.m. Wednesday. Cost is $4 to cover materials. Seniors will learn the techniques for making a snowman decoration for the holidays.

After the craft class, the center will feature a speaker on "Depression: A Very Common Illness" at 10: 30 a.m. Free blood pressure screenings also will be provided at the center from 9 a.m. to noon by Beth Ritter.

The annual Senior Center Holiday Party will take place at 10: 30 a.m. Thursday. At 10: 30 a.m. Dec. 18, the center will be host for a Singing Seniors Holiday Party to celebrate the season.
