Thanks for the memories

Table Talk

So much for the power of the press. I give the Turf Inn in Timonium a positive review, and the next thing you know the restaurant is closed with a sign outside saying "Thanks for the Memories." It turns out the place has been sold; the new owners plan to renovate and open up again next spring.

Changes and closings

And while we're on the subject of closings and other changes, here are a few more:

Sobo Cafe and McMechen Street Cafe in the city, the Middleborough Inn in Essex and Chris's Charcoal Pit in Annapolis have closed. The Russian Tea Room's phone is temporarily disconnected, which doesn't sound good.

Captain's Choice in Ellicott City has new owners and a new name, E.C. Hemingway's. It's being renovated, but will remain a seafood restaurant and bar.

Harry's Cafe and Club on Boston Street has just been sold. No word on what the new owners plan yet.

Sushi Cafe has moved from Thames Street to 1120 Hollins St. Iola's Pizza on Light Street is now Sarah's Cafe. The Inn at Mitchell House in Chestertown has turned into a bed and breakfast.

The Vandiver Inn in Havre de Grace is now only open for private parties.

Reister's Desire in Reisters-town has changed its name and menu. It's now Reister's Country Inn, featuring country cooking and lower prices - and biscuits made from scratch!

Open on Christmas

I've been getting calls from readers wanting to know where they could go out for Christmas dinner.

The dining rooms of most, if not all, hotels will be open Dec. 25. Here are some examples:

Windows in the Renaissance Harborplace Hotel will have a buffet from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. for $29.95 and a sit-down dinner with a special a la carte menu from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. (410-685-8439).

The Harbor Court Hotel is planning a brunch buffet from 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. for $45 (adults) and $18 (children under 10). Dinner will be served in Hampton's, 2 p.m. to 8 p.m., with a table d'hote menu for $65. Prices include everything - taxes, tips and valet parking (410-347-9704).

The Hyatt Regency in the Inner Harbor will have a holiday buffet in its Bistro 300 restaurant for $19.95 (adults) and $9.95 (children) from noon to 5 p.m. Pisces will be open from 5 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. with a holiday menu along with the regular menu (410-528-1234).

Crossroads in the Cross Keys Inn will be open, but with limited hours. Call first (410-435-0101).

Prime Rib will be open on Christmas Day with its regular menu starting at 5 p.m. (410-539-1804).

Carrol's Creek in Annapolis will have a buffet with three seatings, at 1 p.m., 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. The cost will be $19.95 a person MacGregor's in Havre de Grace will be open from noon to 11 p.m. serving its regular menu with Christmas dinners as specials (turkey and ham with all the trimmings) (800-300-6319).

As I hear of other restaurants open on Christmas Day for a special-occasion meal, I'll print the information here.

Brass Elephant lunch

The Brass Elephant downtown is open for lunch Monday through Friday in December. I had a good meal there recently so I can recommend it for holiday parties. The restaurant also runs the Cafe at Ladew Topiary Gardens in Monkton; it will be open Dec. 11-13 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. for lunch.
