December 08, 1998|BY A SUN STAFF WRITER

An unidentified motorcyclist was critically injured yesterday when he was struck by a truck while trying to pass cars in a construction area on Route 97 near Sykesville, state police said.

The man carried no identification, and state police from the Westminster barracks were trying to locate the owner of the motorcycle last night.

Police said the victim suffered severe head injuries and was airlifted to Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore, where he was reported in critical condition.

According to police, the motorcyclist was traveling north on Route 97 near Hoods Mill Road at 1: 06 p.m. when traffic ahead stopped for a construction flagman.

The motorcycle attempted to pass the traffic and struck the left quarter panel of a stopped car, police said. The motorcycle veered into the opposite lane, striking a southbound truck, which pushed the motorcycle and operator under another stopped vehicle, police said.
