Holiday happenings plentiful this week

HOLIDAY NEWS abounds this week. That's no news flash, but you may find a Yuletide gem among these offerings.

Christmas brunch

The Shady Side Rural Heritage Society continues a south county holiday tradition with its Christmas brunch from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday.

Admission is $12.50 per person, and reservations are suggested.

Party, membership drive

Carolyn Middleton of Davidsonville will be the hostess for a Christmas party and membership drive for the Republican Women of Anne Arundel County at 11: 30 a.m. Dec. 16 at her home.

Prospective members are encouraged to attend.

Members are asked to bring an entree or dessert.

Party-goers will sing Christmas carols accompanied by pianist Irma Lee Seek.

Donations of cleaning supplies and personal hygiene products will be collected for holiday donation to the Domestic Violence Shelter.

Lights on the Bay

Lights on the Bay -- the annual festival of lights at Sandy Point State Park -- is open daily from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. through Jan. 3.

It costs $12 per car to make the 2.5-mile drive through a holiday wonderland of lights. There are more than 50 displays in this sparkling spectacle, including some that are animated.

Proceeds benefit the Anne Arundel Medical Center.

'A Christmas Carol'

Catch the annual production of "A Christmas Carol" at the Chesapeake Music Hall weekends through Dec. 29.

Friday and Saturday shows cost $29.95. Doors open at 6: 30 p.m. Fridays, with dinner at 7 p.m. and the show at 8: 30 p.m.

Saturday times are a half-hour earlier.

Sunday shows cost $26.95. Doors open at 12: 30 p.m., with lunch at 1 p.m. and the show at 2: 30 p.m.

There are Wednesday performances. Call for times.

Craft show

A holiday craft show will be held on Saturday at the Apostolic House of Prayer in Millersville. It runs from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Vendor space is still available, and organizers expect to offer handmade arts and crafts as well as homemade holiday treats.

Annapolis Striders race

And now, for some nonholiday-related news.

The Annapolis Striders running club celebrates its 20th anniversary with a 9.3-mile race on Dec. 19 at Quiet Waters Park.

Club members Dave Walser and Jennifer Sullivan are race directors.

The race, which begins at 10 a.m., is the last leg in the club's championship series, but runners are invited to attend regardless of whether they are club members.

Mailed entries must be postmarked by Friday. Advance registration is $5 for nonmembers; there is no fee for Striders.

Registration on the day of the race begins at 8: 30 a.m. in the park's Blue Heron Room. It costs $5 for Striders and $7 for nonmembers.

Refreshments and awards will be provided.
