Man dies, driver hurt in shooting at stoplight

December 06, 1998

A 24-year-old woman was recovering at a Baltimore hospital yesterday after a gunman fired into a car stopped at a red light in East Baltimore -- wounding her and killing her passenger, city police reported.

Charles Lowery Jr., 32, of the 2000 block of Kennedy Ave. was pronounced dead at the scene in the 900 block of E. Monument St. The woman was in stable condition at an area hospital, authorities said.

Homicide Detective Albert Marcus said Lowery and the driver of the 1989 Nissan Sentra were shot multiple times with a semiautomatic pistol late Friday by a gunman, who approached on foot. The car's windows were shattered by bullets, Marcus said.
