Armed man steals truck loaded with coins

December 05, 1998

An armed robber surprised two truck drivers in the parking lot of a Timonium restaurant yesterday afternoon and made off with a truck carrying change machines full of coins, Baltimore County police said.

Police spokeswoman Cpl. Vicki Warehime said an unidentified man with a handgun confronted the drivers in the parking lot of Chi Chi's Mexican Restaurant in the first block of W. Timonium Road about 4:30 p.m. The drivers were ordered into the back of one of the trucks while the gunman drove off with an undisclosed amount of coins in the other.

Warehime said the drivers, who were not harmed, are employed by Seattle-based Coinstar Co. They had agreed to meet in the parking lot to transfer coins from one truck to the other. The robber drove off in a yellow 1997 Penske truck with Virginia tags RA31753.

Anyone with information about the robbery is asked to call county police at 410-887-2198.
