Howard County police charged a 22-year-old Catonsville man yesterday in the attempted rape and kidnapping of a 26-year-old woman outside her Ellicott City apartment, police said.

About midnight Tuesday, the woman was entering her apartment building after work when a half-naked man grabbed her, police said.

The woman's boyfriend heard the fight, police said, raced outside and began battling with the man.

A neighbor called 911 and yelled that police were on their way, said Sgt. Morris Carroll, a police spokesman.

The attacker got into a white van and drove away, said police, who found a similar van parked nearby. Police said they found the van's owner in Catonsville. He was identified by the woman and her boyfriend as the attacker, police said.

Charged with attempted rape, attempted kidnapping, first-degree assault, two counts of second-degree assault and indecent exposure is Joshua J. Henry of McIntosh Court.
