Antietam illumination

Antietam National Battlefield in Sharpsburg will be aglow with 23,110 luminaires - candles in paper bags - Saturday evening, each candle honoring a killed, wounded or lost-in-action Civil War soldier. After the candles are lighted by 976 volunteers, visitors can drive along the 4.5-mile route of the illuminated memorial. The drive takes approximately one hour, but be prepared to wait - according to the organizers, each year there's a long lineup.

jTC Hours for the 10th annual illumination are 6 p.m. to midnight. Enter the battlefield from Route 34. Admission is free. In case of inclement weather, the event takes place Dec. 12. Wave to Santa and Mrs. Claus when they join colorful floats, marching bands, clowns, horses, motorcycles and antique cars in Saturday's 16th Annual Ocean City Christmas Parade along Coastal Highway. More than 80 units are expected to participate in the two-hour holiday parade. Judges will award trophies in nine categories.

The parade steps off at 11 a.m. at 100th Street and proceeds along Coastal Highway to the Gold Coast Mall at 115th Street. Bleachers will be set up in the mall parking lot. Admission is free. Call 410-289-2800.
