Towson women fall to UMBC Lange's four 3-pointers help deal Tigers first loss

A pair of scoring bursts by the cat-quick UMBC women's team early in the second half lifted the underdog Retrievers to a 64-50 victory over previously unbeaten Towson at the Towson Center last night.

Ahead by as many as a dozen points in the first half, UMBC (2-3) sprinted away from a 26-25 halftime lead with runs of 9-0 and 13-4 to halt Towson's winning streak at four.

The Tigers appeared as if they might get blown out early, falling behind 13-1. The visitors were riddling Towson's slow-to-react zone defense inside and freshman Jami Lange hit a couple of three-pointers, making it look easy.

In short order, however, UMBC suddenly couldn't get an easy basket inside and couldn't buy a basket from the perimeter. Meanwhile, the Tigers were getting second shots upon request and Shniece Perry cashed in with eight points over a 10-minute span.

Towson shot less than 25 percent in the first half, going 0-for-9 from beyond the three-point arc, but enjoyed a 31-20 rebounding edge, including 16 on the offensive board.

The Retrievers started the second half nearly as well as they started the game, a nine-point run boosting them into a 39-30 lead after four minutes. UMBC's lead was 50-41 with 10 minutes remaining.

Two more three-pointers by Lange and some fine work off the bench by Maggie McDevitt ledUMBC's breakaway. Strong defense and a school-record-tying 23 rebounds by Monica Logan did the rest.

"We challenged some people to start making some shots in the second half and they did," said first-year coach Jennifer Bednarek of UMBC. "We passed the ball better, too, the inside people tossing it back out when Towson's zone sagged."
