Gov. Parris N. Glendening and Republican Ellen R. Sauerbrey set a record for a Maryland gubernatorial election by raising a combined $12.6 million for their campaigns.
While the governor won last month's election, Sauerbrey raised slightly more money, $6.4 million to Glendening's $6.2 million.
Listed here are contributors who gave $4,000 or more to either candidate. The list was compiled by The Sun from reports filed by the campaigns with the state election board in Annapolis.
Under Maryland law, individuals, companies and most other organizations can contribute no more than $4,000 to a candidate during a four-year election cycle. But in gubernatorial contests, the lieutenant governor is treated as a separate candidacy - stretching the effective limit to $8,000.
For political action committees, campaign committees and party organizations, the limit is $6,000 per candidate or $12,000 per gubernatorial ticket.
Glendening collected 31.6 percent of his campaign cash from out-of-state supporters, compared with 20.1 percent for Sauerbrey.
