Comsat World Systems promotes Susan Miller

Comsat World Systems has promoted Susan Miller to vice president of engineering and operations. She will have responsibility for planning, development and operation of facilities used by the company and its customers. With the Bethesda-based company since 1987, the University of Southern California master's graduate was formerly with Hughes Aircraft Corp.

Michael McDonald joins Z-Firms as director

Z-Firms says Michael McDonald has joined the group as director, executive supplementary program. The Western Maryland College graduate is former communications manager of Fidelity Investments. He will create and develop personalized communications products and services for the Baltimore-based Zurich Financial Services unit.

Knab is vice president at Gray, Kirk/VanSant

Gray, Kirk/VanSant named Mary Ann Knab a vice president. Knab came to the Baltimore-based agency in its merger with Image Dynamics Inc. An MBA graduate of Loyola College, the Parkton resident is a master's degree candidate at Johns Hopkins University.

Oxman, Gallagher named to directorships at Sass

Sass & Associates, the Annapolis-based marketing communications firm, appointed Steve Oxman as art director and Ron Gallagher as director of interactive media.

Oxman, formerly with West & Brady, will be responsible for the design of advertising and collateral materials as well as overseeing the design and production art staffs. A graduate of the Pratt Institute, he lives in Baltimore. Gallagher, a University of Maine graduate, will create Web sites and interactive presentations for the firm's clients.

Gilden names Schmidt an account executive

Gilden Advertising named Kearston Schmidt an account executive for the Roland Park ad and design agency for the finance and high technology industries. A graduate of the College of Wooster in Ohio, she formerly was a research writer at the National Institutes of Health.

Banking and finance

Provident promotes Durham, Sheeler, Smith-Strother

Provident Bank of Maryland appointed Ann Durham and Donald E. Sheeler as senior vice presidents and Lisa Smith-Strother as vice president, direct response.

Durham oversees the bank's "in-store" network. A Kingsville resident, she is an MBA graduate of Loyola College and a member of the Baltimore County Leadership Committee. Sheeler is manager of the bank's subsidiary Provident Investment Center. A graduate of Randolph-Macon College in Virginia, he is active in the several professional organizations, including the Municipal Bond Club of Baltimore. He resides in Lutherville.

Smith-Strother will have responsibility for development, implementation and analysis of the direct-mail programs of the bank's divisions. An MBA graduate of Wilmington College in Delaware, she is active in several organizations, including the Delaware Urban Bankers Association and the F. D. Jones Community Center in Chester, Pa.

Blue Cross appoints Knox marketing vice president

Blue Cross Blue Shield of Maryland and the National Capital Area named Barbara A. Knox vice president of marketing and product development. A Baltimore resident and University of Baltimore MBA graduate, she has been with the Owings Mills-based health insurer since 1988.

Piper & Marbury named 12 partners to the large Baltimore-based regional law firm.

Robert C. Douglas, Herbert D. Frerichs Jr., Marta D. Harting, Katrina C. Kamantauskas-Holder, C. Kevin Kobbe, Susan K. Datesman and Carville Collins are practicing from the Baltimore office. Sandra Jarva Weiss is assigned to the Baltimore-Washington practice. David J. Fisher is admitted to the New York office. Joseph Kernen and O. Daniel Ansa are assigned to the firm's Philadelphia office and Kevin P. Mullen is the new partner in the Washington office.

Ellin & Tucker, a Baltimore-based regional accounting and consulting firm, named Deborah A. Halper and Deborah Bateman senior accountants in its tax department. Halper, a certified public accountant formerly with Cox, Ferber & Associates, is a University of Maryland graduate and lives in Ellicott City. Bateman, a University of Baltimore graduate, lives in Parkville.
