Loyola

November 13, 1998|By Kevin Eck

Coach: Pat Coyle, seventh season at Loyola (96-76).

Affiliation: Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference.

1997-98 record: 20-9 overall, 13-5 in MAAC.

Radio: WKDB (1570 AM), five games to be announced.

Arena: Reitz Arena (3,000).

Starters lost: None.

Tickets: $5. Call 410-617-5013.

Best home game: Maryland, Nov. 17. The Greyhounds upset the Terps in last season's opener.

Best visiting player: Melanie Halker, Siena, Feb. 11. The MAAC Player of the Year led the conference in scoring (21) and rebounding (11) last season.

Outlook: The Greyhounds went from 19 losses two years ago to 20 wins last season, but they fell short of their goal of reaching the NCAA tournament when they lost to Fairfield by six points in the MAAC championship game. With its entire starting lineup intact -- including four seniors -- Loyola appears to have the talent and experience to make a strong run at the conference title. Overall, this may be Coyle's deepest team -- nine of the 10 returning players saw significant playing time, eight scored in double figures at least once and six led the team in scoring at least once. The Greyhounds have one of the top players in the conference in All-MAAC center Mary Anne Kirsch and a forward combination that consists of two former MAAC All-Rookie selections. The frontcourt is complemented by a versatile and deep backcourt.

Around the league: Siena will be tough with Halker back, but the Greyhounds should be right there.
