MOUNT AIRY'S FIRE Prevention Queen, Anne Marie Histon, was crowned Miss Carroll County Fire Prevention Queen for 1998-1999 on Sunday.

A junior at South Carroll High School, the 16-year-old won the honor during a ceremony held at Winfield Community Volunteer Fire Department. The Carroll County Fire Prevention Queen crown was formerly held by Jen Cole of Winfield.

Escorted by Jeff Lowman, a member of Mount Airy Junior Fire Company, Histon completed a contest interview and a presentation about how fires start and the proper use of different fire extinguishers.

As the contest winner, she received a $500 savings bond and a fire prevention pin. In addition, she was given a fire pin from Allegany County to serve as its representative.

"I felt so proud that Allegany wanted me to represent them as well. Everyone's been so great and supportive through the whole process," Histon says.

Runner-up for the Carroll County title was Miss Manchester, Jenny Glassman. Each contestant received a savings bond and a fire pin.

In addition to her duties as Mount Airy's fire prevention queen, Histon will represent Carroll County in fire prevention presentations, school programs, tours and parades. She will be eligible to compete in the Maryland Fire Prevention Queen contest held in Ocean City in June.

Histon, who has been active with Mount Airy Fire Department for more than four months, has learned a great deal from her fellow members.

"I've learned an amazing amount of information, thanks to the Mount Airy members. They always took the time to answer any question I had and helped me so much," she said.

Histon says she enjoys teaching children about fire safety.

"I'm so happy I've gotten involved with this. It's such an honor. I really enjoy working with the kids. Some of the kids really amaze me with how much they know about fire prevention."
