Suzanne Jones, Rachel Shuck and Stephanie Jones each scored as visiting Broadneck defeated Northeast, 3-0, yesterday for the Class 3A East region championship.

The Bruins (4-8-2), who won just one game during the regular season, avenged a 1-0 loss to the Eagles (12-6) and advanced to the state semifinals for the first time since the mid-1980s.

Suzanne Jones scored on a breakaway midway through the first half, and Shuck stuck in a pass from Bryn Weller to put Broadneck up 2-0 at half.

Stephanie Jones added an insurance goal midway through the second half.

"They're just a completely different team than at the beginning," said Bruins coach Jennifer Sweeney. "Good things come to people who work hard. We never, ever gave up. After all the losses, they still came back and played."

Sweeney received another strong defensive effort from goalkeeper Lori Southard (12 saves) and backs M.J. Pruner, Kathy Freeburg and Tara Witmer, as the Bruins allowed just three goals in three regional games.

Broadneck had a bye in the opening round.
