Derek Larussa's goal, assisted by Greg Hopper 3: 40 into the second overtime period, lifted unranked Patapsco (11-4) to a 1-0 2A North Region upset victory at ninth-ranked Franklin (13-3) yesterday.

The visitors captured their second straight regional title -- their third in the past four years -- and avenged an earlier 2-1 loss with their sixth shutout and seventh straight win.

The Patriots next meet the winner of tonight's West Regional between Frederick County's Middletown and Montgomery County's Bethesda Chevy-Chase at Thomas Johnson at 5 p.m. on Friday.

Franklin, winner of this year's Baltimore County title, was led by sophomore sensation Chris Borcik, whose 19 goals and five assists included three game-winners.

"We played an outstanding game, but you've got to give credit to Patapsco," said Franklin coach Larry Meekins. "Our kids gave it all they had, but they got that nice breakaway in the end."

The Patriots got a brilliant effort from 6-foot-3, 230-pound keeper Eric Lloyd (10 saves).

"We were without some key starters when we played them earlier," said Jeff Chopper, assistant to coach Dave Ingle. "They're a great team, but today, we were a little more prepared."

Patapsco "started out well this season," said defender Chad Clarke, "then we kind of went into a slide" that included a 2-1 overtime loss to Dulaney despite the Patriots' 30-9 advantage in shots on goal.

"But we're playing well right now," Clarke said.

No. 15 Perry Hall 11, Mervo 0: Fred Jonjo scored three goals and Mike Ryan added two to power the host Gators (12-4-2) past the Mustangs in Class 4A North. Scot Dufel had three assists for the Gators, who outshot the Mustangs, 25-7.

The Gators next play Churchill of Montgomery County, ranked No. 2 by The Washington Post and a 4-2 winner over 4A West Region opponent Wootton.

No. 14 Fallston 2, Dundalk 1, 2OT: The Cougars (12-4-1) overcame a 1-0 deficit with a penalty kick by Ryan Welch with 3: 10 left in regulation, then took the shootout victory over the visiting Owls to qualify for this weekend's 3A state semifinals. Fallston plays Linganore Friday at a site and time to be determined.

Hereford 2, Sparrows Point 1, 2OT: Playing on a tender ankle, Todd Smith scored a goal and assisted on the other by Brett Gunther with four minutes left in the second overtime period as the Bulls (9-6-1) advanced to the 1A state semifinals to be held either Friday or Saturday.

Sparrows Point's goal came on a penalty kick in the game's initial 10 minutes.
