Newfoundland dog is found, returned to her grateful owner

November 10, 1998

Bear, a lost Newfoundland dog, has returned home safe and sound.

Her owner, Martin Lego, credits "all the wonderful publicity and all the community support."

"Sometimes, happy endings happen," Lego said.

Bear, frightened by the Liberty High School Band playing at the opening of the new Safeway Supermarket on Oct. 28, had escaped from Lego's truck. Lego searched the neighborhood, distributed 3,000 fliers with Bear's picture and contacted area schools.

"I heard kids cheering when I called and told them the good news," he said.

A motorist spotted Bear on Bartholow Road on Sunday morning, stopped the car and opened the door. "She told me Bear got right in, when she called her name," Lego said.

Bear is about 10 pounds lighter, hardly noticeable on her 140-pound frame, and had briers in her coat, but her veterinarian pronounced her fine yesterday, Lego said.
