Motorist injured when wheel falls off engine en route to fire

A rear wheel flew off a fire engine rushing to a spreading brush fire yesterday, hitting a car and injuring the driver, Anne Arundel County Fire Department officials said.

The engine was one of 20 called to the scene of a brush fire that swept across 7 to 10 acres on the shore of Rock Creek. The accident occurred on Route 10 near Furnace Branch Road in Glen Burnie.

The driver was taken to Harbor Hospital with minor injuries, officials said. Three children in the car were unharmed. Fire Department officials would not disclose their names.

No one was injured in the fire, which began about 1 p.m., and no property damage was reported.

Fire officials did not know the cause of the fire yesterday.
