Joseph H. Schwartz,98, national commander of the Veterans of World War I of the U.S.A., died Thursday in Sun City West, Ariz. He was elected head of the federally chartered veterans group in 1996. Membership dropped from about 24,000 three years ago to an estimated 3,000 this year.

Virginia Docking,96, who wrote a newspaper column about her life while her husband was governor of Kansas and whose son later became governor, died Friday in Kansas City, Kan.

She was married to the late George Docking, who served as governor from 1957 to 1961. Their son, the late Robert Docking, was governor from 1967 until 1975.

John Hunt,88, who led the British expedition that enabled Sir Edmund Hillary of New Zealand and Tenzing Norgay of Nepal to conquer Mount Everest, died Saturday at his home in Henley-on-Thames after a brief illness.
