THE SUREST SIGN of the coming holiday season is not the cooling weather -- it's the tchotchkes.

Craft fairs are as numerous as heavy sweaters these days. Shop now and you can avoid those week-of-Christmas crowds -- and prices -- at the mall. On Saturday, there are five craft events:

The annual craft fair of the South River High School Sports Boosters is from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the school. In addition to many handmade goods, the event will offer Christmas wreaths and ornaments, and gift certificates from local businesses. Some items will be offered through a silent auction. Information: 410-798-0567.

The South Arundel Junior Women's Club will hold a craft fair from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at St. James Parish in Lothian. Baked goods and lunch will be sold. Information: 410-257-2941.

Baldwin Memorial United Methodist Church will convert its Millersville education building into a holiday bazaar from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Information: 410-987-4273.

St. Andrew by the Bay will spice up its holiday craft fair with the raffle of a Princess Beanie Baby. The event is from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Cape St. Claire. Snacks and lunch will be sold along with arts and crafts. Information: 410-647-4169.

Centenary United Methodist Church will offer plants, used books and crafts at its holiday bazaar from 9: 30 a.m. to 4: 30 p.m. at the church in Shady Side. Turkey dinners will be served from 11: 30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Information: 410-867-4923.

Free flu shots

The county Health Department will offer free flu shots today at the Annapolis Health Services Building on Harry S. Truman Parkway from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. to 7: 30 p.m. Appointments are not required.

The department will offer the shots at Oakland United Methodist Church in West River from 9: 30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday and at the Annapolis Senior Center from 9 a.m. to noon Nov. 17.

Information: 410-222-7343.

Academy artist series

The Naval Academy kicks off its annual distinguished artist series at 7: 30 p.m. Saturday with a performance of the St. Petersburg Symphony Orchestra.
